GE's French door, side-by-side and bottom-freezer models use either an in-door ice maker with its own bucket or a freezer ice maker with a feeler arm, and the built-in UNC15 nugget unit has its own light codes. The model label tells us which of the three we are servicing. ### A cold start before the first fill GE's manual says the ice maker only fills with water once it has cooled to 15°F, and a new installation can take 12 to 24 hours to make ice. An empty bin on the first day is expected; an empty bin after that starts with a freezer temperature check. ### No filter, no ice On GE models with a cartridge, the dispenser and ice maker will not run unless a filter or the bypass plug is in place. A cartridge removed and not replaced explains a dead ice maker before any part does. ### A pressure window for the fill GE asks for household water pressure between 25 and 120 psi. On a weak supply the manual notes you may hear the ice maker cycle several times to fill one batch, and cubes come out small. ### Ice-maker-ready freezers Some GE models ship without an ice maker but ready for GE's kit IM4D. When a freezer has never made ice, we check whether a kit was ever fitted before looking for a failure. Parts Ice maker assemblies, inlet valves and filter housings are listed by model number. Repair or replace An ice maker is one of the more replaceable parts of a GE refrigerator, so a failed one rarely justifies a new refrigerator. GE gives 12 to 24 hours, because the ice maker waits for the mold to reach 15°F before it fills. GE also suggests throwing away the first few batches to clear the line. ### Why do I hear my GE ice maker fill several times for one batch? GE's manual links that to lower-than-average water pressure. It needs 25 to 120 psi, and below that the fill takes several tries. ### What does CI mean on a GE?
