## What a repair usually costs.

Ice maker repairs are mostly small, because the water path is made of small parts: a filter, a line, a valve, a tube, a sensor. On a door or freezer ice maker the larger appliance around it is what a new purchase would cost, so repairing the ice maker nearly always wins. On an undercounter unit the math is still usually in favor of repair unless the sealed cooling system or a discontinued control board has failed. A countertop unit is the one kind where a new machine is often the sensible answer once the motor or the cooling system goes.

## What moves the price.

Five things decide where in its band a repair lands. None of them is known for certain until a technician has seen the ice maker.

### Door, freezer, undercounter or countertop

A freezer compartment ice maker is the simplest to reach. A door ice maker adds the dispenser, the auger and a fill tube through the door. An undercounter unit brings its own cooling system and drain, and a countertop unit is small enough that a new one is sometimes the better choice.

### Where the water comes from and goes

A supply line that runs a long way, a saddle valve on an old pipe, a well with low pressure or a drain with no floor outlet can add work beyond the ice maker itself. Checking them is part of every visit.

### The part that failed

Filters, lines, gaskets and cleaning sit at the low end. Inlet valves, auger motors and drain pumps are a step up, and control boards and the sealed cooling system of a built-in unit sit at the top.

### Hard water and how long since the last cleaning

A unit that has been descaled on schedule usually needs only the part that failed. One that has never been cleaned may need a full descaling before the repair can be tested properly.

### Which make it is, and how soon its parts come

Parts for everyday makes are often in stock locally. Premium and built-in units can mean costlier parts and longer waits, and a control board no longer made can decide the question by itself. A photo of the model label sent with the booking helps the right part be on hand.

## Not every ice maker breaks the same way.

A door ice maker freezes cubes high in the freezer door and feeds them down the chute to the dispenser, a freezer ice maker fills a tray or a mold and drops the ice into a bin below, an undercounter ice maker is plumbed into the cabinetry with a drain of its own, and a countertop nugget maker pours water from a reservoir you fill by hand. ### Door ice maker

The ice maker that feeds the dispenser on the outside of a door: tucked into an insulated box in the left door of a French door model, or at the top of the freezer side of a side-by-side, with a chute and an auger carrying cubes to your glass.

### Freezer ice maker

The ice maker that sits inside the freezer compartment itself, a tray that twists or a mold with a heater and an ejector, dropping cubes into a bin or drawer you open by hand, with no dispenser on the door.

### Undercounter ice maker

A built-in residential ice maker that lives under a kitchen, bar or basement counter, making clear cubes or chewable nugget ice on its own cooling system, with a water line in and a gravity drain or a small drain pump out.

### What does the ice maker diagnostic visit cost?

The figure is given while you book, before anyone sets out. You also learn then whether it is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.

### Why are ice maker repair costs shown as bands and not prices?

Until the water supply is traced and the ice maker is opened, a band is the only honest answer. An empty bin might need a new filter, a thawed fill tube, a water inlet valve or a whole ice maker assembly, and an undercounter unit set tight into cabinetry adds time to any of them. The bands rank ice maker jobs from the lightest to the heaviest.

### Does the diagnosis commit me to the repair?

No. You get the repair figure first and decide when you are ready. Turn it down and you pay for the visit alone.

### Could the ice maker repair end up costing more than I approved?

No. The number you say yes to is the number for that work, and it does not move. If the technician finds a second problem after opening things up, such as a kinked supply line behind the unit or a cracked drain fitting, you are told and asked before anything is added.
