Row houses where the ice maker line often taps into old copper through a saddle valve, and the soft city water is gentle on valves, so most leaks start at the old fitting rather than at the unit. ## What Brooklyn Heights does to an ice maker. Brooklyn Heights holds more than 600 houses built before the Civil War, one of the largest such groups in the country. The neighborhood has very few high-rise buildings; its blocks are mostly rowhouses, with a few true mansions along Pierrepont Street and Pierrepont Place. Much of Brooklyn Heights lies within the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, a city district and a National Historic Landmark District. In the days after Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Con Edison at one point counted about 35,000 Brooklyn customers without service. [All of New York Metro](https://icemakerrepair.center/locations/new-york/) ### Older housing stock Older houses often feed the ice maker through a saddle valve clamped onto a copper pipe, a fitting plumbers no longer recommend, and its rubber seal hardens with age until a slow drip at the clamp soaks the subfloor behind the unit. ### Small kitchens and bars Small kitchens rarely have a floor drain or a spare sink tailpiece near an undercounter spot, so a compact ice maker there usually lifts its melt water to the sink with a drain pump, and a pump that quits leaves water pooling in the cabinet base. ### Mixed housing Tenants in older rentals often live with an ice maker the landlord bought secondhand, and one missing its filter bypass plug, or fitted with a generic cartridge that does not seat, can leak into the filter housing and down the front of the cabinet. ## A visit in Brooklyn Heights.
