Point Loma's steady sea breezes and long north-south ridge made it a well-known gliding site from 1929 to 1935. ## What Point Loma does to an ice maker. Fearing that San Diego Bay would silt up, engineers diverted the San Diego River to its present course north of Point Loma with a levee built in 1877. Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego was commissioned on Point Loma in 1921 and Naval Training Center San Diego in 1923, and the training center closed in 1997. All three City of San Diego treatment plants kept every turbidity reading under 0.3 NTU in 2025, with peaks of 0.13, 0.10 and 0.14. [All of San Diego](https://icemakerrepair.center/locations/san-diego/) ### On the water When a storm surge floods a ground-floor kitchen or a pool bar, an ice maker that stood in seawater is not restarted: salt left in its pump, wiring and control can short weeks later, so it stays unplugged and closed off at its valve until it has been opened and checked. ### Older housing stock Older houses often feed the ice maker through a saddle valve clamped onto a copper pipe, a fitting plumbers no longer recommend, and its rubber seal hardens with age until a slow drip at the clamp soaks the subfloor behind the unit. ### Mixed housing When an old kitchen is updated but its plumbing is not, a new ice maker is hooked to an old shutoff that may not close fully, so the valve is tested before any work starts and replaced if it cannot stop the flow. ## A visit in Point Loma.
