A door dispenser moves ice from the bin to your glass with a short chain of parts. Pressing the paddle closes a switch, a small motor turns an auger in the bin that pushes cubes forward, a crusher may cut them, and a flap in the chute swings open to let them fall. If the bin is full and nothing comes out, one of those links is not doing its part. The most common story is ice that melted and refroze into a block in the bin or the chute, which the auger cannot move. After that comes a motor or a switch that has stopped, a chute flap stuck shut, or a lock setting on the panel. A dispenser that hums but delivers nothing points at a jam; one that is silent points at the switch, the motor or the control. No. It can crack the bin or damage the auger. Take the bin out, let the block loosen in the sink with warm water, dry it and put it back. ### The dispenser gives crushed ice but no cubes. What does that mean? The crusher and the cube setting use the same auger but a different path at the front. A cube setting that fails usually points at the small motor or the lever that switches between them. ### Why does the ice keep jamming a few weeks after I clear it? Something is letting ice melt and refreeze: a door or compartment seal that gaps, a chute flap that does not close, or ice that sits unused. Those are worth a visit. ### Can I use the water dispenser while the ice side is broken? Usually, yes. They share the door but not the auger or the chute.
