Most ice makers talk through lights before they use codes. A countertop nugget maker flashes an add-water or bin-full light. An undercounter unit flashes a clean, descale or service light when a cycle is due or when it detects a water or harvest problem. A door or freezer ice maker may have a small status light on the unit, and the panel on the door can flash a filter reminder or an ice-off symbol. Many of these are reminders rather than failures. What matters is which light, whether it flashes or stays on, and whether the ice maker keeps working. A light that flashes in a pattern often stands for a code that the manual lists. The 6 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Which light is flashing, and what symbol or word is printed next to it? 02 Does it flash in a steady rhythm or a pattern of short and long blinks? 03 Is the ice maker still making ice while the light flashes? 04 Did the light start after a power outage, a filter change or a cleaning cycle? 05 What kind of ice maker is it: in the door, in the freezer, undercounter or countertop? ## Check these before you book. Ice maker light flashing: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Read the symbol or word next to the light and count the pattern of blinks. 02 Look up that light in the manual for your model; many are reminders with a simple reset. 03 Do the maintenance the light asks for, such as a filter, a refill or a cleaning cycle, then reset it. ### Also worth checking - If the light returns, turn the unit off for a few minutes and back on. - Tell us which light flashes, its pattern, and whether the ice maker still works. ### How soon does it need a visit? A flashing light is rarely urgent. Handle the reminder it points to first. Book a visit if it comes back after a reset, if the ice maker has stopped, or if water appears under the unit. ## The causes, cheapest first. 6 things ice maker light flashing turns out to be, from reminder for filter, cleaning or water to sensor or control problem. Why? Most panels do not detect a new filter; they count days or gallons. Hold the reset button described in the manual until the light changes. ### Is a flashing light the same as an error code? Sometimes. On models without a display the pattern of blinks stands for a code, and the manual lists what each pattern means. ### My undercounter unit flashes the clean light every few months. Is that normal? Yes. It is reminding you of a cleaning cycle. In hard water areas it may come sooner, and skipping it leads to slow harvests and cloudy ice. ### Can I keep using the ice while the light flashes? If it is a reminder and the ice looks and tastes right, yes. If the light is about cleaning and the ice looks cloudy or smells, clean the unit first. --- **[Read on the site: Ice Maker Light Flashing: Causes and Fixes](https://icemakerrepair.center/problems/ice-maker-light-flashing/)** **[Book a visit with IceMakerRepair.center](https://icemakerrepair.center/schedule/)**
