What Leak Detected
actually means.

On GE bottom-freezer models that use the RPWFE filter, the filter's chip lets the control watch for leaks. When it senses water there, the dispenser shuts off, and GE says a detected leak needs a service call to correct. The same message can also follow a wrong or non-genuine filter.

What to do when Leak Detected shows on the ice maker

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from GE's own guidance for Leak Detected on its ice makers. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Close the water supply valve to the refrigerator and wipe up any water you can see.

02

Open the filter compartment and check the filter is seated with FRONT showing, not BACK.

03

Confirm the filter is a genuine RPWFE with the ID chip on the back; a filter without one can trigger the message.

04

If water was actually present or the message returns with the correct filter, book a visit.

What not to do

Leak Detected is not a reminder that the filter is old; that is Replace Water Filter. It is also not proof of a leak every time, because a filter without GE's ID chip can bring up the same words.

What you may

Questions
about Leak Detected.

Can I clear Leak Detected myself?
Close the water supply valve to the refrigerator and wipe up any water you can see. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Why did my GE dispenser stop and show Leak Detected?
The control shut the dispenser off because it sensed water at the filter, or because the filter it reads is not a genuine RPWFE. Check the filter first, and close the water valve if you see any water.
Can a new filter make a GE show Leak Detected?
Yes. GE's own page says the ID chip spots a wrong or non-genuine filter, and the display may then read Leak Detected. Reseating a genuine RPWFE with FRONT facing out is the first thing to try.
Is it safe to keep using the ice maker while Leak Detected is on?
The dispenser is already off, and if water has reached the floor the supply valve should stay closed until the leak is found. A technician checks the filter head and the lines before the water goes back on.

Still showing Leak Detected?

Book with the code or the blink pattern written exactly as the ice maker shows it, the full model number, and whether there is any water on the floor — when there is a code, that is where the diagnosis starts.
