Ice Dispenser Not Working

The ice dispenser not working means you press the paddle and nothing comes, or the motor hums without ice, or only a few chips fall while the bin behind the door is full.

What it
usually means.

A door dispenser moves ice from the bin to your glass with a short chain of parts. Pressing the paddle closes a switch, a small motor turns an auger in the bin that pushes cubes forward, a crusher may cut them, and a flap in the chute swings open to let them fall. If the bin is full and nothing comes out, one of those links is not doing its part. The most common story is ice that melted and refroze into a block in the bin or the chute, which the auger cannot move. After that comes a motor or a switch that has stopped, a chute flap stuck shut, or a lock setting on the panel. A dispenser that hums but delivers nothing points at a jam; one that is silent points at the switch, the motor or the control.

Answer these first

01

Is the bin behind the door or in the freezer full of loose ice, or empty?

02

When you press the paddle, do you hear a hum, a click, or nothing at all?

03

Does water still come out of the dispenser?

04

Is there a lock or child-lock symbol lit on the panel?

05

Are cubes frozen together in the bin or packed into the chute?

Check these
before you book.

Ice dispenser not working: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Look for a lock symbol on the panel and clear it using the steps in your manual.

02

Take out the ice bin and look for a fused block of cubes or a chute packed with ice.

03

Press the paddle with the bin removed and listen for the motor.

Also worth checking

  • Check that the bin slides fully back and engages the drive at the rear.
  • Tell us whether water still dispenses and whether the problem returns soon after the bin is cleared.

How soon does it need a visit?

A dispenser that has stopped is not urgent. Clear the lock and any jammed ice first. If ice keeps refreezing in the bin or the chute, book a visit, because that often points at a seal or airflow problem in the door.

The causes,
cheapest first.

6 things ice dispenser not working turns out to be, from dispenser lock turned on to door ice compartment frosting up.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    Dispenser lock turned on

A lock setting disables the paddle and is easy to switch on by leaning on the panel. The manual shows how to clear it.

  2. 02 no repair

    Ice frozen into a block

Cubes that melt a little and refreeze fuse together, and the auger cannot push the block forward. Emptying the bin and letting the chute clear usually restores it.

  3. 03 low

Chute flap stuck or its motor failed

The flap at the top of the chute opens as you press the paddle. Frozen shut, or with its small motor or solenoid failed, it holds back the ice.

  4. 04 low

    Paddle switch worn

The switch behind the paddle wears after years of glasses pushing against it. When it stops closing, the dispenser is silent.

  5. 05 low to moderate

    Auger motor stopped

The motor at the back of the bin drives the auger. A motor that hums without turning, or makes no sound, is replaced as a part.

  6. 06 moderate

    Door ice compartment frosting up

On some door ice makers, air leaking around the compartment seal builds frost that jams the bin and the auger again soon after it is cleared.

Questions about
ice dispenser not working.

Is it safe to chip at frozen ice in the bin with a knife?
No. It can crack the bin or damage the auger. Take the bin out, let the block loosen in the sink with warm water, dry it and put it back.
The dispenser gives crushed ice but no cubes. What does that mean?
The crusher and the cube setting use the same auger but a different path at the front. A cube setting that fails usually points at the small motor or the lever that switches between them.
Why does the ice keep jamming a few weeks after I clear it?
Something is letting ice melt and refreeze: a door or compartment seal that gaps, a chute flap that does not close, or ice that sits unused. Those are worth a visit.
Can I use the water dispenser while the ice side is broken?
Usually, yes. They share the door but not the auger or the chute. If water also stops, tell us, because it narrows the search to the supply side.
