What CI
actually means.

CI appears on GE models with electronic dispenser controls, and GE's short definition is a request to check the ice maker for proper operation. It is a prompt about the ice maker in the freezer or in the left door, not a note about cooling in general.

What to do when CI shows on the ice maker

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from GE's own guidance for CI on its ice makers. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Look in the ice bucket: note whether cubes are forming, stuck together or missing entirely.

02

Check the ice maker's slide switch is ON and nothing blocks the feeler arm or the bucket.

03

Unplug the refrigerator for a minute or two and plug it back in, which GE says can clear a displayed code.

04

If CI comes back or no new cubes appear within a day, book a visit.

Still there?

It usually turns into ice maker assembly replacement. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

CI does not say the freezer is warm; GE uses FF for that. It also does not point at a specific part, so the ice maker's fill, its mold heater and its water supply all stay on the list until tested.

What you may
notice with it.

The ice maker problems CI tends to arrive with. Answer these at the ice maker before anyone is booked.

Questions
about CI.

Can I clear CI myself?
Look in the ice bucket: note whether cubes are forming, stuck together or missing entirely. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
What should I check first when my GE shows CI?
Start with the ice maker itself: the on/off switch, the feeler arm and whether cubes are frozen together in the tray. Then confirm the water valve behind the unit is open. If all of that looks right and CI stays, the ice maker needs testing.
Can a power reset clear CI on a GE French door model?
Sometimes. GE says unplugging for a minute or two can reset the control panel and clear a code. If the ice maker still makes nothing afterward, the reset only hid the message.
Does CI mean my GE ice maker has to be replaced?
Not by itself. The same prompt can follow a closed water valve, a frozen fill tube or a jammed ejector, and each has a smaller fix. A technician tests the fill and the harvest before any assembly is ordered.

Back to your everyday

Still showing CI?

Book with the code or the blink pattern written exactly as the ice maker shows it, the full model number, and whether there is any water on the floor — when there is a code, that is where the diagnosis starts.
