Give the address
Add the street address and a phone number, so the technician can call ahead of the visit.
The make and model are on a small sticker or plate: for an ice maker in the door or the freezer, look along the inside wall of the fresh food section or under the crisper drawers; for an undercounter unit, open its door and check the frame around the opening or the kick plate at the bottom. A countertop nugget maker carries it on the underside. Those two lines tell us which ice maker we are coming to.

Four steps,
and no surprises.
The three steps in the form are how you book. These four are what actually happens once a technician is standing in your kitchen.
Water traced from the valve to the mold
The technician checks the supply valve, the line, the filter and the pressure at the inlet, then runs a fill and a harvest, all before naming the part that failed.
A number before the work
You hear what the ice maker needs and what it will cost before a single part goes in. If a new assembly or a new unit makes more sense than repairing this one, you hear that too.
Everyday ice maker parts already on board
Water inlet valves, supply line fittings, fill tube heaters and common filters travel in the van. A complete ice maker assembly, a drain pump or a control board for one model is ordered by number, so sharing that number at booking can save a second trip.
Filled, frozen and dropped in front of you
With the new part in, the technician runs a test fill, checks every fitting for a drip, and watches the first harvest or the first push through the dispenser, so the repair is proved while you are there.
Not every ice maker
breaks the same way.
A door ice maker freezes cubes high in the freezer door and feeds them down the chute to the dispenser, a freezer ice maker fills a tray or a mold and drops the ice into a bin below, an undercounter ice maker is plumbed into the cabinetry with a drain of its own, and a countertop nugget maker pours water from a reservoir you fill by hand. Pick out the one in your home.
All ice maker types
Door ice maker
The ice maker that feeds the dispenser on the outside of a door: tucked into an insulated box in the left door of a French door model, or at the top of the freezer side of a side-by-side, with a chute and an auger carrying cubes to your glass.
Freezer ice maker
The ice maker that sits inside the freezer compartment itself, a tray that twists or a mold with a heater and an ejector, dropping cubes into a bin or drawer you open by hand, with no dispenser on the door.
Undercounter ice maker
A built-in residential ice maker that lives under a kitchen, bar or basement counter, making clear cubes or chewable nugget ice on its own cooling system, with a water line in and a gravity drain or a small drain pump out.
Countertop ice maker
A portable nugget or bullet ice maker that sits on the counter and plugs into an ordinary outlet, fed by a reservoir you fill by hand rather than a water line, with an auger or tray, a small cooling system and a drain plug.
Every kind we serviceAll ice makers, side by side
The archive puts the 4 types against each other: how to tell which you own, what fails on each, and which manufacturers build them.
How to tell yoursWhat fails on eachWho makes them Open the type archiveA bin that is full by morning.
Cubes that come out whole, clear and dry.
Maybe the bin has held the same few cubes for days, the cubes come out thin and hollow, the dispenser hums and drops nothing, or a puddle keeps showing up under the freezer drawer. Start with what the ice maker did the last time somebody reached for ice; each page says what that usually means before it says a word about booking.
All 17 problems
Ice Maker Leaking on the Floor
A puddle that spreads from under the door dispenser, from the kickplate of the freezer, from beneath an undercounter unit or around a countertop model, and comes back after you mop it up is the classic sign of an ice maker leaking on the floor.
Ice Maker Water Line Leaking Behind the Cabinet
An ice maker water line leaking behind the appliance shows up as a damp baseboard, a wet toe kick, swollen flooring at the back corners or a drip in the ceiling of the room below.
Undercounter Ice Maker Overflowing
An undercounter ice maker overflowing pushes water out from under its door or kickplate, floods the bin with slush, or leaves the cabinet beside it wet.
Ice Maker Tripping the Breaker
The ice maker keeps cutting the power at the panel or the GFCI outlet, often in the middle of a harvest, after a leak, or each time an undercounter unit starts its pump; an ice maker tripping breaker after breaker is a warning, not a nuisance.
No Ice Coming From the Ice Maker
The mold sits empty or holds one frozen batch that never drops, the bin stays bare for days, and the dispenser gives water as usual: an ice maker not making ice while the rest of the appliance carries on normally.
Ice Maker Making Small or Hollow Cubes
The ice maker making small cubes, thin crescents, hollow shells with water inside or fragments that break apart in the bin tells you the mold is not getting a full fill.

What a repair
usually costs.
Ice maker repairs are mostly small, because the water path is made of small parts: a filter, a line, a valve, a tube, a sensor. On a door or freezer ice maker the larger appliance around it is what a new purchase would cost, so repairing the ice maker nearly always wins. On an undercounter unit the math is still usually in favor of repair unless the sealed cooling system or a discontinued control board has failed. A countertop unit is the one kind where a new machine is often the sensible answer once the motor or the cooling system goes.
| Repair | Relative cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ice maker module, mold or twisting tray | moderate | A module for a freezer compartment is one of the more affordable parts in this list, while a door compartment module and its wiring sit higher. The price is set only after the water, the temperature and the bin sensor are proved good. |
| Water inlet valve and its fittings | low to moderate | The valve itself is a modest part. Rolling the appliance out, fitting new compression nuts and leak-testing every joint on the way back make up most of the job. |
| Frozen fill tube, tube heater or drip cause | low | Thawing the tube costs only time. The bill rises a step when the heater on a French door model or a dripping valve has to be replaced so the tube stays clear. |
| Auger, auger motor, crusher or chute flap | low to moderate | A flap, a switch or a coupling is small and quick to reach. An auger motor, or the gearbox on a nugget unit, moves the job toward the middle of the scale. |
| Ice bin, compartment cover, gasket or latch | low | Gaskets and latches are inexpensive and fitted from the front. A new bin made for one model, especially one with the auger built in, costs a little more. |
| Water filter, supply line or shutoff valve | lowest | A filter, a braided line or a quarter-turn shutoff is among the least costly work an ice maker can need. A line that has to be run a long way to reach the appliance adds some time. |
| Drain pump, check valve or drain hose | low to moderate | Clearing and rerouting a drain costs little in parts. A new drain pump for an undercounter unit, and pulling the unit from its cabinet to reach it, puts the job in the middle. |
| Cleaning, descaling and sanitizing | low | The work is mostly labor and the maker's cleaner, with no parts in most cases. A unit left uncleaned for years takes longer, and a scaled distribution tube may need replacing. |
| Control board, thermistor or bin sensor | moderate to highest | A thermistor, a bin sensor or a cleaned connector is a small repair. A control board for an undercounter unit is one of the costliest parts an ice maker has, and it can take time to arrive. |

Where an ice maker lives changes how its water treats it: hard water that crusts the fill cup and the valve screen, an old saddle valve on a copper line in a basement, a condo bar where the drain runs to a pump, a vacation home where the line sat full for months. These notes are about ice makers in each place, not about the place itself.
All service areasTampa BayFL · 31 areas
Tampa Bay drinks a mix of wells, rivers and a seawater desalination plant, so what reaches the ice maker tastes a little different from one season to the next, and it leaves scale on molds and valves. Humidity keeps bins damp and clumping, lightning strikes and storm outages jolt ice maker controls, and the 2024 storm surges reached kitchens and pool bars on low coastal streets.
OrlandoFL · 30 areas
Around Orlando the water is pumped from the Floridan aquifer and is hard, so scale builds quickly on molds, valves and the freezing plates of undercounter units. Vacation houses and rentals put the ice maker in the hands of new guests every week, afternoon storms cut power and surge controls, and many owners manage their ice makers from far away through a property manager.
Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas
South Florida's tap water comes from a shallow limestone aquifer and leaves a steady film of scale on ice maker molds and valves, while humidity keeps bins wet and prone to clumping. Towers restrict water work and require supplies closed when owners leave, hurricanes melt full bins and flood low floors, and winter owners switch their ice makers back on after months away.
New York MetroNY · 75 areas
New York's water is soft, mountain reservoir water, so scale is rarely the reason an ice maker fails here. Tall buildings feed kitchens from roof tanks or pumps, so pressure varies from floor to floor, a water main break upstream can send sediment into an inlet screen, and most ice maker repairs are arranged through the super and the building's rules.
HoustonTX · 36 areas
Greater Houston ice makers work against heat and humidity most of the year, and the calendar adds the rest: hurricane outages that melt a full bin, a hard freeze like 2021 that split supply lines in walls and garages, and boil-water notices after which every ice maker has to be emptied, flushed and given a fresh filter.
ChicagoIL · 50 areas
Chicagoland drinks moderately hard Lake Michigan water, so ice makers here scale slowly but steadily, and the older neighborhoods still sit on lead service lines that make a working filter matter. Winter is the ice maker's hardest season, with cold snaps freezing lines that run past outside walls, and basement bars with drain pumps are common in the suburbs.
Los AngelesCA · 95 areas
Greater Los Angeles drinks some of the hardest water in the country, much of it brought in from the Colorado River, so scale on molds, valves and freezing plates is the everyday ice maker story. Earthquakes make a flexible supply connection part of every install, outdoor bars run in the heat for most of the year, and fire recovery means flushing lines in rebuilt kitchens.
San DiegoCA · 31 areas
San Diego's water is mostly imported and among the hardest in the country, so undercounter and door ice makers scale quickly and need descaling more often than most. The region's military families move often, leaving ice makers disconnected and reconnected between tenants, and near the ocean salt air works on outdoor bar units and their drains.
San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas
Most of the Bay Area drinks soft mountain water, so scale is a smaller part of the ice maker story here than taste, chloramine and filters. Earthquakes are the reason to use braided or flexible supply connections, fire-weather power shutoffs leave bins to melt and refreeze, and older flats still feed their ice makers through valves decades old.
