Ice Maker Assembly Replacement

A new ice maker module fitted in the freezer compartment or the door compartment, after the water, the temperature and the bin sensor have been proved good, so the new part is not blamed for an old problem.

What the ice maker assembly replacement
involves.

The ice maker assembly is the block that holds the mold or the twisting tray, the small motor that empties it, the heater or the tray mechanism, and the switch or light beam that senses a full bin. On most door and freezer designs it is sold and replaced as one piece, because the parts inside are not offered separately. It is also the most commonly replaced part that did not need replacing, so the technician first proves the three things it depends on: water arrives in the right amount, the compartment is cold enough, and the bin sensor reads correctly. Once those check out and the module still will not harvest, the old one comes out on a few screws and one plug, and a new one matched to your model goes in. The fill is adjusted, a cycle is forced, and the first batches are discarded.

How the visit goes

Ice maker assembly replacement,
step by step.

Hand back an ice maker that fills, freezes and drops a full batch, with the first cubes thrown out and the bin clean.

01

Confirm water reaches the mold, the compartment temperature is right and the bin sensor reads the bin correctly.

02

Force a harvest to see the module fail with your own eyes rather than assume it.

03

Remove the old module, clean the mounting area and check the wiring plug for corrosion or melted pins.

04

Fit the new assembly matched to your model, set it level and adjust the fill if the design allows.

05

Hand back an ice maker that fills, freezes and drops a full batch, with the first cubes thrown out and the bin clean.

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether the ice maker is a twisting tray or a mold with fingers, if you can see it
  2. Whether any ice appears at all, or the mold sits full and frozen
  3. Whether the water dispenser, if you have one, still works
  4. How old the appliance is and whether the ice maker was replaced before

Moderate,
on the site's scale.

A module for a freezer compartment is one of the more affordable parts in this list, while a door compartment module and its wiring sit higher. The price is set only after the water, the temperature and the bin sensor are proved good.

Ice maker assembly replacement,
where we come out.

The kitchen, the climate and the building all change how the ice maker assembly replacement goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

When a Tampa Bay ice maker's module has to be replaced, the new one goes onto a clean water path: the old mold is often crusted from years of mineral-bearing water, so the fill cup, the tube and the valve screen are cleared before the swap is finished.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando rental owners want ice again by the next check-in, so a replacement assembly is matched to the model number the manager sends ahead, and the module is fitted and its first harvest watched during the gap between guests.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In a South Florida tower, swapping the ice maker assembly in place is far simpler than moving a built-in column through the building, so the module comes out of the freezer or door where it sits and the unit never leaves its opening.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

New York's soft water leaves an old ice maker assembly clean inside, so when one is replaced here it is usually for a worn motor, a broken arm or a cracked mold, and a tray-style module in a narrow freezer is often swapped in under an hour.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston's long cooling season keeps ice makers cycling all year, and when a module finally wears out, the new assembly is set up with a fresh filter and a check of the bin's drain holes, since humidity-soaked bins clump around a new unit too.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Older Chicagoland freezers often carry a simple tray ice maker with a wire arm, and its replacement assembly is still made for many models, which makes putting in a new module a sensible repair on a unit the family intends to keep.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

A Los Angeles ice maker assembly that stopped harvesting is often choked with calcium rather than broken, so the mold and its heater are cleaned and tested first, and the module is replaced only when the motor or the heater has failed outright.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

When a San Diego ice maker module is replaced, the technician also descales the water path feeding it, since the region's imported hard water would scale a new mold within months and make the new assembly look defective.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area remodels leave many door and drawer ice makers inside panel-front columns, and replacing the assembly there means working inside the freezer without disturbing the custom panel, so the part and the approach are settled from the model plate ahead of time.

Questions about
the ice maker assembly replacement.

Can I just buy an ice maker module online and swap it myself?
On some freezer models the swap is simple, but the module is often not the part that failed. If the valve, the fill tube or the bin sensor is the real problem, a new module will not make ice either, and many parts sellers do not take electrical parts back once they are installed.
The mold is full of frozen water but nothing comes out. Is the module dead?
Very often, yes: water arrived and froze, which means the supply and the temperature are fine, and the part that should empty the mold did not. Before it is condemned, the technician checks that the bin sensor is not holding it off and that the harvest is not simply waiting on a timer.
Why do the first few batches after a new ice maker look odd?
The new mold or tray and the fill tube still hold air and a little manufacturing residue, and the water in the line has been sitting. Throw out the first two or three batches; by the end of the first day the cubes should be full-sized and clear of any taste.
Can a door ice maker be swapped for a freezer one, or the other way round?
No. Each design fits the compartment, the wiring and the airflow of its own model. The replacement has to be the module listed for your model number, which is why a photo of the label helps before the visit.
