No Ice Coming From the Ice Maker

The mold sits empty or holds one frozen batch that never drops, the bin stays bare for days, and the dispenser gives water as usual: an ice maker not making ice while the rest of the appliance carries on normally.

What it
usually means.

Ice making is a short loop that repeats: the valve opens and fills the mold, the water freezes, a sensor reads that it is frozen, a heater or a twist frees the cubes, the ejector drops them into the bin, and the loop starts again as long as the bin has room. When the ice maker is not making ice, the question worth asking is which step stopped. An empty, dry mold points at water that never arrived: a closed valve, a clogged filter, an iced fill tube or a dead inlet valve. A mold holding frozen cubes that never drop points at the harvest: the motor, the heater or the thermostat that starts it. A full bin that reads as empty, or an arm raised by a stray cube, simply tells the ice maker to rest. Looking into the mold usually settles which half of the loop to chase.

Answer these first

01

Is the mold dry and empty, or does it hold a batch of cubes that never drops into the bin?

02

Is the ice maker switched on, and is the wire arm or bin sensor clear of stray cubes?

03

Does the water dispenser in the door still run at a normal speed?

04

Did the problem start after a filter change, a move, a power outage or plumbing work?

05

Is this a door ice maker, a freezer ice maker, an undercounter unit or a countertop model?

No ice coming from the ice maker: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Look into the mold: dry and empty means water is not arriving, frozen cubes that stay put mean the harvest has stopped.

02

Make sure the ice maker is switched on in the panel or at its own switch, and that the arm or bin sensor is not blocked by cubes.

03

Run the water dispenser for a full glass; slow or no water puts the supply side first on the list.

Also worth checking

  • Confirm the valve that feeds the ice maker is fully open, especially after plumbing work.
  • Note when the filter was last changed and whether it clicked fully into place.

How soon does it need a visit?

An ice maker that has stopped is an inconvenience, not an emergency. Switch it off if the water supply is off, so the valve does not keep trying to fill, and book a visit when it suits you. It becomes urgent only if water appears on the floor or the breaker trips.

7 things no ice coming from the ice maker turns out to be, from ice maker switched off or arm raised to door ice compartment too warm.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Ice maker switched off or arm raised

A panel setting turned off by accident, or a wire arm lifted by a stack of cubes, makes the ice maker wait. Lower the arm, clear the jam and switch it back on, then give it a day.

  2. 02 no repair

Water valve under the sink closed

The valve that feeds the ice maker is often turned off during plumbing work and forgotten. A dry mold after any work under the sink is the clue.

  3. 03 lowest

    Filter overdue or seated wrong

A clogged cartridge lets too little water through for the fill time, and a cartridge in a bypass cap or not locked in can stop the flow altogether.

  4. 04 low

    Fill tube iced shut

A plug of ice in the tube at the back of the mold blocks every fill that follows. The mold stays dry although the valve can be heard opening.

  5. 05 low to moderate

    Inlet valve coil or screen

A valve whose coil has failed never opens, and one whose inlet screen is packed with grit opens without letting much through. Either leaves the mold without water.

  6. 06 moderate

    Harvest motor or heater stopped

When cubes freeze but never drop, the ejector motor, the mold heater or the thermostat that triggers them has stopped. On most models the whole assembly is replaced.

  7. 07 moderate

    Door ice compartment too warm

A door ice maker depends on cold air ducted from the freezer and a tight seal on its compartment. A blocked duct or a torn seal leaves water in the mold that never freezes hard enough to harvest.

Questions about
no ice coming from the ice maker.

How long should a new or reset ice maker take to drop its first cubes?
Plan on most of a day. The freezer has to reach its working cold, the first fills often purge air from the line, and many makers throw away the first few batches because they can taste of the new line.
I can hear a click and a hum, but no water comes. What does that tell you?
That the control is calling for water and the valve may be trying to open. The water is stopping somewhere between the house valve and the mold, most often at an iced fill tube or a clogged valve screen.
Does a manual test button help?
Many ice makers have one, and it forces a harvest and a fill. It is a useful check, but hold it only as long as the manual says, because a repeated test can overfill the mold.
Should I switch the ice maker off while I wait for the repair?
Yes, if the water is off or the mold is dry. It stops the valve and the motor working against nothing, and it keeps a stray fill from spilling into the bin.
