What the ice dispenser and auger repair
involves.

An auger is a slow-turning spiral that moves ice forward. In a door dispenser it sits in the bottom of the bin and pushes cubes toward the chute, through a set of blades if you ask for crushed ice; a small motor turns it, a paddle or a button switches it on, and a flap at the end of the chute opens to let the ice out. In a nugget ice maker, under the counter or on it, an auger turns inside a chilled cylinder and scrapes the ice off the walls as it forms, pushing it up and out. Both work hard against ice and wear in similar ways: the motor weakens, the coupling that joins it to the auger cracks, ice freezes around the blades, or the flap stays open and lets moist air freeze the chute shut. The technician runs the dispenser, frees and inspects the auger, tests the motor and the switch, and replaces what is worn.

A flap, a switch or a coupling is small and quick to reach. An auger motor, or the gearbox on a nugget unit, moves the job toward the middle of the scale.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Tampa Bay humidity makes ice in the bin stick together, and a door dispenser trying to push a fused block can jam its auger or strain its motor, so the bin is broken up and emptied before the auger motor is tested.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Guests in Orlando rentals press the dispenser far more than a household would, and a paddle switch, a chute door or a crusher blade worn by all that use is a common find, often replaced between one reservation and the next.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

South Florida owners returning from a season away often find the auger frozen into a solid bin of old ice, so the bin is thawed and emptied, the auger freed and the first batches thrown out before the dispenser is judged.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

In a busy New York family kitchen the dispenser's chute flap takes knocks all day, and one that no longer closes lets warm air in until ice freezes in the chute, so the flap and its seal are replaced rather than the whole dispenser.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

After a long Houston outage, ice that melted into the dispenser's chute refreezes as a plug when the power returns, and a dispenser that runs but delivers nothing is cleared at the chute and the auger before any motor is replaced.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland families who fill coolers from the door dispenser before a lake weekend or a tailgate push the auger motor hard, and one that clicks without turning is tested for a worn motor or a stripped coupling.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

In Los Angeles mineral dust from the hard water can crust the dispenser's water nozzle and the chute beside it, so a dispenser that drips or spits is cleaned at the nozzle as well as checked at the auger and the chute door.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Families in San Diego rentals inherit dispensers whose crusher blades were dulled or bent by previous tenants, and a dispenser that makes cubes but will not crush is repaired at the blade and the solenoid that switches between the two.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area kitchens that went all-electric in a remodel often gained a new door-dispenser model at the same time, and its first dispenser trouble is usually a chute jam or a paddle switch, which is sorted before the board is suspected.

Questions about
the ice dispenser and auger repair.

The dispenser gives crushed ice but no cubes. What could that be?
The cubed setting relies on a small gate or a change in auger direction to let whole cubes past the blades. When that gate sticks or its solenoid fails, only crushed ice comes out. It is a small part reached from the bin and the dispenser housing.
Why does ice pile up in the chute on the door?
The flap at the end of the chute should snap shut after each use. When it stays open, warm moist air from the kitchen gets in and the ice melts and refreezes at the outlet. A worn spring, a failed solenoid or a torn seal on the flap is the usual cause.
Can I break up frozen ice in the bin with a butter knife?
It is safer to lift the bin out and let the block melt in the sink. Prying at it in place can bend the auger, crack the bin or damage the blades, and those cost more than the ice was worth.
My nugget ice maker makes a loud grinding sound. Is the motor failing?
Not necessarily. Scale inside the freezing cylinder makes the auger drag, and the sound often goes away after a proper descaling. If it continues after cleaning, the motor, the gearbox or the auger bearing is next to check.
