Ice Maker Leaking on the Floor

A puddle that spreads from under the door dispenser, from the kickplate of the freezer, from beneath an undercounter unit or around a countertop model, and comes back after you mop it up is the classic sign of an ice maker leaking on the floor.

Stay clear of any outlet in the water, then close the water valve

Treat a leak that returns as urgent. Water under the cabinets or near an outlet does damage and adds an electrical risk, so shut the supply valve first and keep clear of any outlet the water reaches. Turn the breaker off only from a dry panel, then book a visit; do not run the ice maker again until the source is found.

What it
usually means.

Every ice maker runs on water that has to go somewhere: into the mold, into the ice, and on an undercounter model out through a drain. A puddle means one of those paths has escaped. On a door or freezer ice maker the usual sources are the supply line at the back, the inlet valve on the rear wall, a fill cup that overflows because the tube behind it is iced over, or melted ice from a dispenser chute that no longer seals. An undercounter ice maker adds its own routes, since it melts ice in the bin all day and purges water after every batch; a slow drain or a stuck float sends that water onto the floor. A countertop nugget maker can only leak what its reservoir holds, which limits the damage but not the mess. Water spreading toward an outlet, a cord or under the cabinets is what makes this urgent.

A technician's hands tighten a thin water line onto a small plastic inlet valve on the lower back panel of a kitchen appliance pulled forward on a protective mat in a US home. The 6 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Is the water in front of the appliance, underneath it, or reaching out from the back corners?

02

Is any of the water near a wall outlet, a power strip or the cord of the appliance?

03

Does the puddle grow within minutes, or only return overnight?

04

Is there ice or water sitting in the dispenser chute or on the ledge below the ice bin?

05

Was the water filter changed, the appliance moved, or the supply line touched recently?

Check these
before you book.

Ice maker leaking on the floor: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Close the water supply valve that feeds the ice maker, usually under the kitchen sink, behind the appliance or in the basement ceiling below it; if you cannot find it, close the main shutoff for the house.

02

Keep out of the water if it has reached an outlet, a power strip or the appliance cord, and do not unplug anything standing in the puddle.

03

Switch the breaker off only if the electrical panel is dry and well away from the leak; otherwise leave the power alone and wait for help.

Also worth checking

  • Once the area is safe, soak up the water with towels and note where the puddle started, front, back or underneath.
  • Tell us your model number, whether a filter was changed lately, and whether the leak slowed after the valve was closed.

6 things ice maker leaking on the floor turns out to be, from filter cartridge not locked in to undercounter drain slow or pump stopped.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    Filter cartridge not locked in

A new cartridge that stops a quarter turn short lets water weep from its housing, usually inside the fresh-food section or behind the base grille, and it runs out onto the floor. Seating it fully often ends the leak.

  2. 02 low

Supply line loose or split at the back

The thin line that feeds the ice maker is often plastic, and a nut that worked loose or a line crushed when the appliance was pushed back drips steadily down the wall and out across the floor.

  3. 03 low to moderate

    Inlet valve cracked or weeping

The valve that opens to fill the mold sits low on the back of the cabinet. A cracked body or a worn seal leaks under pressure even while the ice maker is idle.

  4. 04 low

Fill water spilling past a frozen tube

When the tube into the mold ices over, the next fill backs up, spills out of the fill cup and runs down inside the freezer until it reaches the floor at the front.

  5. 05 low to moderate

    Melt from the dispenser chute

On a door ice maker, a chute flap that no longer closes lets warm kitchen air in; ice melts in the chute and drips from the dispenser onto the floor below.

  6. 06 moderate

Undercounter drain slow or pump stopped

An undercounter ice maker sends melt and purge water to a floor drain or a small pump. When either stops keeping up, the water comes out from under the front of the unit.

Questions about
ice maker leaking on the floor.

Can I keep the ice maker running if I put a towel under the leak?
Please do not. A towel hides how fast the water is coming and lets it soak into the subfloor. Close the supply valve and switch the ice maker off; the rest of the appliance can usually keep running while you wait for a visit.
Why does the leak stop when I close the water valve?
It tells you the water is coming from the pressurized side: the supply line, the filter housing or the inlet valve. A leak that carries on with the valve shut is melt water, most often from the dispenser chute or an undercounter drain.
Is it safe to mop around the outlet behind the appliance?
Only after the power to that outlet is off, and only if you reached the panel without crossing the water. If the outlet itself is wet, leave it and let us, or an electrician, check it.
My countertop nugget maker left water on the counter. Is that the same problem?
It is smaller, because the unit only holds what you poured in. Check that the drain plug on the bottom is tight and the reservoir is not cracked, and keep the cord and its outlet away from the spill.
