What the frozen fill tube repair
involves.
The fill tube is the last few inches of the water's path: a short plastic tube that passes through the cold wall of the freezer or the door compartment and ends over the mold. After each fill it is supposed to drain empty. If water lingers there, it freezes, and the next fill has nowhere to go. The mold stays dry, the valve buzzes, and some of the water may back up and run down the back wall or out of the door. Thawing the tube is the easy half of the job. The harder half is finding why it froze: a valve that drips after it closes, pressure so low that the water only dribbles in, a tube heater on a French door model that has stopped working, or a gap in a seal that lets moist air into the compartment. The technician thaws the tube with gentle warm air, checks each of those causes and fixes the one that is there.

Thawing the tube costs only time. The bill rises a step when the heater on a French door model or a dripping valve has to be replaced so the tube stays clear.

Leave you with a fill tube that stays clear through several cycles and an ice maker that fills a full mold every time.
Confirm the mold is dry during a forced fill and find the ice plug in the tube.
Thaw the tube with gentle warm air from inside the compartment, catching the melt water with a towel.
Check the inlet valve for dripping, the water pressure at the inlet, and the tube heater where the model has one.
Replace the valve, the heater, the tube or a failed seal, whichever caused the freeze.

The kitchen, the climate and the building all change how the frozen fill tube repair goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.
All service areasTampa BayFL · 31 areas
In humid Tampa Bay kitchens, warm moist air leaks into the freezer through a door opened often, and it can freeze a drop at the end of the fill tube until a plug forms, so the tube is thawed and the door seal checked together.
OrlandoFL · 30 areas
A low trickle through a failing inlet valve in an Orlando rental keeps the fill tube wet between cycles until it freezes shut, so a frozen tube there is thawed and the valve that let the trickle through is tested, not just the ice cleared.
Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas
After a South Florida outage the freezer warms and then refreezes whatever water sat in the fill tube, and an ice maker that makes no ice once the power returns is often waiting on a tube that froze solid while the unit recovered.
New York MetroNY · 75 areas
New York's roof-tank buildings sometimes run low pressure on upper floors, and a slow, dribbling fill freezes at the tube's end far more easily than a quick one, so a repeatedly frozen tube is checked against the building's pressure.
HoustonTX · 36 areas
Houston's humidity loads a freezer with moisture every time the door opens, so a fill tube that freezes again and again after being thawed is often a torn gasket or a door left ajar, and the fix is at the seal as much as at the tube.
ChicagoIL · 50 areas
A Chicagoland ice maker whose fill tube freezes in January can be losing heat through a wall behind the freezer, and the tube heater on models that have one is tested along with the line's route before the tube is simply thawed again.
Los AngelesCA · 95 areas
In Los Angeles a scaled inlet valve that drips between fills is a common reason a fill tube freezes, so thawing the tube is only half the repair and the valve is tested, and replaced if it lets water through while closed.
San DiegoCA · 31 areas
San Diego's mild climate makes a frozen fill tube a surprise to owners, and it usually traces to low water pressure after a valve or filter change or to a door that does not seal, which the technician checks while the tube thaws.
San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas
A Bay Area ice maker whose fill tube freezes after a fire-weather shutoff has often simply refrozen its standing water, but one that freezes week after week points to a leaking valve or a failing tube heater, which are tested in turn.
