A technician's hands tighten a thin water line onto a small plastic inlet valve on the lower back panel of a kitchen appliance pulled forward on a protective mat in a US home.

What the ice maker water inlet valve repair
involves.

Every plumbed ice maker has an inlet valve: a small electric gate on the back of the cabinet or behind the kickplate, where the household water line meets the appliance. When the control asks for a fill, a coil pulls the valve open for a few seconds, then lets it snap shut. Three things go wrong with it. It may not open at all, and the mold stays dry. It may open only partway, because its tiny inlet screen is clogged with sediment or the coil is weak, and the cubes come out small and hollow. Or it may not close fully, and a slow drip freezes in the fill tube or, on an undercounter unit, keeps the reservoir overflowing. The technician measures the coil, checks the pressure at the inlet, looks at the screen and the fittings, and replaces the valve when the readings show it is the weak link in that chain.

How the visit goes

Ice maker water inlet valve repair,
step by step.

Turn the water back on, check every joint for weeping, and leave you with a valve that fills the ice maker fully and closes cleanly.

01

Shut off the water at the supply valve and move the appliance forward, protecting the floor.

02

Measure the pressure reaching the inlet and the resistance of the valve coil, and inspect the inlet screen.

03

Check the fittings, the line and the fill tube for drips, frost or signs of a valve that does not close.

04

Replace the valve with the one listed for your model, with new fittings where the old ones are worn.

05

Turn the water back on, check every joint for weeping, and leave you with a valve that fills the ice maker fully and closes cleanly.

Ice Maker Making Small or Hollow Cubes

6 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether the cubes have become smaller, hollow or fewer over time
  2. Whether you have seen ice in the fill tube or water around the back of the appliance
  3. Whether the water line is plastic, braided or copper, if you can see it
  4. Whether the house has low water pressure elsewhere, or a whole-house filter or softener

Low to moderate,
on the site's scale.

The valve itself is a modest part. Rolling the appliance out, fitting new compression nuts and leak-testing every joint on the way back make up most of the job.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Tampa Bay's changing blend of well, river and desalinated water leaves grit and scale on the inlet valve's screen, so a slow fill there is cleaned at the screen and tested with a pressure reading before a new valve goes in.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

An inlet valve in an Orlando vacation home that sat closed between bookings can stick in either direction, so a valve that no longer shuts off, or no longer opens, is tested with power and water before it is replaced.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

A weeping inlet valve behind a South Florida condo's built-in unit can drip for weeks into the floor of the tower, so a valve that leaks at its body or its fitting is replaced promptly and the floor under the unit is checked for water.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Upper floors in New York buildings fed from roof tanks can sit near the low end of what an ice maker's inlet valve needs, so a slow fill is measured at the valve before a new one is fitted, since a valve cannot make up for pressure the building does not supply.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Power surges when the grid returns after a Houston storm can burn out an inlet valve's coil, and a unit that hums but never fills afterward has its coil tested with a meter before the whole valve is replaced.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland ice makers on lake water scale their inlet valves slowly, so a valve that fails here is often a cracked body from a winter when the line froze, so the tubing and its fittings are checked for splits along with the new valve.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles water can scale an inlet valve until it no longer closes tightly, and a valve that lets water trickle into the mold between cycles leaves the ice fused into a slab, so a scaled valve is replaced rather than cleaned.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

In San Diego a mineral-heavy supply stiffens the diaphragm of an inlet valve over time, so a door ice maker that fills unevenly is tested at the valve, and any softener in the garage is checked for salt and settings as well.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Hetch Hetchy and Mokelumne water carries almost no minerals, so a Bay Area ice maker's inlet valve seldom scales shut; when one quits, the technician meters its solenoid and looks for a split body from an earthquake jolt or a line pulled taut behind the unit.

Questions about
the ice maker water inlet valve repair.

What water pressure does an ice maker valve need?
Most makers want at least 20 pounds per square inch at the valve, and many prefer 40 or more. A house on a well, a long thin supply line, a saddle valve that has partly closed or a clogged whole-house filter can all bring it below that.
Why does the valve on the back buzz and then nothing fills?
The buzz is the coil being switched on, so power is getting there. If no water flows, the inlet screen may be packed with sediment, the supply valve may be partly closed, or the valve itself may be stuck. A pressure reading at the inlet sorts out which.
Is a saddle valve on my water pipe a problem?
It can be. A saddle valve pierces the pipe with a small needle, and over time the hole scales up and the flow drops, or the gasket starts to seep. When the inlet valve is replaced, many owners have the saddle valve swapped for a proper quarter-turn shutoff at the same time.
Can a bad inlet valve flood the kitchen?
A valve that sticks open usually overfills the mold, and the extra water freezes in the bin or runs out through the dispenser or the drain. On an undercounter unit with a slow drain, that water can reach the floor. Close the supply valve and keep away from any outlet in the water until it is checked.
