Error codes

Ice maker
error codes,
read properly.

A code narrows the search and is also the thing most often read wrong: the same characters mean different things on different brands, and a fair number of the codes people look up are not failures at all — they are modes the appliance was left in.

Three things before
you look it up.

A code is a lead, not a verdict. These decide whether the answer you find will be any use.

01

Every letter, digit and blinking light

Write the code down in order and note which light blinks and how many times. Take a photo first, because pressing the ice button or cutting the power can clear it.

02

The model number from the sticker

Look along the inside wall of the fresh food section, under the crisper drawers, or around the door opening of an undercounter unit. The same code can mean the water valve on one make and a full bin on another.

03

Is there water on the floor or near an outlet?

If there is, close the water valve and keep clear of the outlet before anything else. If the floor is dry, the next open appointment is soon enough.

What each kind
of code means.

Codes fall into a handful of families. The family says more about the likely repair than the characters do — and one of them is not a repair at all.

How to read a code

Mode, not a failure

39 codes

Something the ice maker was switched into, often without anyone noticing, rather than something that broke: ice turned off from the panel or by the wire arm lifted while reaching into the bin, a control lock, a Sabbath setting, a cleaning cycle still running, a reminder that the water filter is due. No part has worn out, and the ice maker's own buttons or arm put it right.

Water supply and fill

42 codes

The ice maker asked for water and got too little, too slowly or none at all, or water kept arriving after the fill should have ended. A closed shutoff, a kinked line, a clogged filter and low house pressure are ruled out before the water inlet valve is replaced or the fill tube is thawed. If water is on the floor, close the supply valve before reading anything on the display.

Ice making and harvest

21 codes

The ice maker froze a batch and could not release it, or the harvest never started: the ejector arm or the twisting tray stalled, the mold heater did not loosen the cubes, or the arm that senses a full bin reported the wrong thing. Ice jammed against the arm and a bin pushed in crooked are cleared first; a motor module or a whole ice maker assembly comes after.

Temperature sensors

15 codes

The control lost track of how cold the ice mold or the ice compartment is, because a thermistor reads nonsense or its wire lost contact. Without that reading the ice maker cannot tell when a batch is frozen, so it stops or harvests at the wrong time. Frost packed around the sensor and a loose plug are checked before the sensor itself is changed.

Fans and airflow

4 codes

The fan that moves cold air to the ice maker stopped, slowed or froze in place. A door ice maker depends on that air, carried to the door through a duct, so when the fan quits the ice compartment warms and cubes melt and refreeze into clumps. Ice blocking the blades or the duct is ruled out before a motor is ordered.

Dispenser and auger

9 codes

The dispenser was asked for ice and could not deliver it: the auger motor stalled against a frozen block, the flap at the bottom of the chute stayed shut, or the paddle switch never told the control it was pressed. Emptying the bin and thawing the chute come before the auger motor, the door flap solenoid or the switch is replaced.

Drain and pump

4 codes

An undercounter ice maker could not get rid of its meltwater or its rinse water: the drain pump did not run, its float stuck, or the drain line is blocked, kinked or frozen. Water backing up inside can spill onto the floor, so the water supply is closed before anything else, then the line and the pump are cleared or replaced.

Control board and communication

8 codes

The boards that run the ice maker stopped hearing each other, or one of them failed: the main control lost contact with the dispenser panel or the ice maker module, or a board reported an electrical problem of its own. Water that dripped onto a connector and a loose harness are checked before a board is ordered by model number. If the ice maker keeps tripping the breaker, leave it off until the visit.

Questions about
the codes.

The code on my ice maker is not on this site. What next?
That only means its page is not written yet; we add an ice maker code once its maker explains it in a manual or on a support page. Copy it exactly, count the blinks if a light is flashing, and type it into the booking form so the technician can match it to your model.
Does an ice maker code mean the same thing on every make?
No. A code that points at the water valve on one make can mean a full bin or a sensor on another, and some makers changed their codes between model years. An ice maker code only makes sense next to the brand and, often, the full model number.
Can I clear an ice maker code on my own?
Some clear after the ice maker is switched off and on again or the unit is unplugged for a few minutes, and a code that stays away was likely a passing hiccup in the fill. A code that returns with every harvest points at a real problem. If water is on the floor while the code shows, close the valve and book instead of trying again.
My ice maker shows a code but still makes ice. Is anything wrong?
Maybe not. Several codes owners look up are settings rather than failures, such as ice off, a control lock, a Sabbath mode, a cleaning cycle or a filter reminder, and none of them needs a part. The page for each of these says whether it is only a setting and which button or arm turns it back.
