GE ice makers,
specifically.
GE puts its ice makers in two places: behind a small door on the inside of the left fresh food door on French door models, and in the freezer on others. It also sells a 15-inch built-in nugget ice maker under the GE name. Most GE ice calls turn out to be about water getting to the mold.

GE builds 3 of the 4 ice maker types this site covers. Which one decides how the visit is planned.
All ice maker typesWhat is particular
to GE.
GE's French door, side-by-side and bottom-freezer models use either an in-door ice maker with its own bucket or a freezer ice maker with a feeler arm, and the built-in UNC15 nugget unit has its own light codes. The model label tells us which of the three we are servicing.
A cold start before the first fill
GE's manual says the ice maker only fills with water once it has cooled to 15°F, and a new installation can take 12 to 24 hours to make ice. An empty bin on the first day is expected; an empty bin after that starts with a freezer temperature check.
No filter, no ice
On GE models with a cartridge, the dispenser and ice maker will not run unless a filter or the bypass plug is in place. A cartridge removed and not replaced explains a dead ice maker before any part does.
A pressure window for the fill
GE asks for household water pressure between 25 and 120 psi. On a weak supply the manual notes you may hear the ice maker cycle several times to fill one batch, and cubes come out small.
Ice-maker-ready freezers
Some GE models ship without an ice maker but ready for GE's kit IM4D. When a freezer has never made ice, we check whether a kit was ever fitted before looking for a failure.
Parts
Ice maker assemblies, inlet valves and filter housings are listed by model number. Door ice maker parts on French door models are specific to the door layout, so we confirm the model before ordering.
Repair or replace
An ice maker is one of the more replaceable parts of a GE refrigerator, so a failed one rarely justifies a new refrigerator. The picture changes when the sealed system or the main board is failing at the same time.
