A technician's hands press a new gray gasket into the edge of an open ice compartment cover on the inside of a French door in a US home kitchen, the ice bin resting on the counter behind.

Ice Bin and Door Seal Repair

The bin, its rails, the compartment cover and the gaskets that keep the ice cold and dry, replaced when a crack, a warped cover or a torn seal lets warm air in and leaves the ice wet, clumped or dripping.

What the ice bin and door seal repair
involves.

Ice keeps well only when it stays below freezing and dry. On a door ice maker that job falls to the insulated cover over the compartment and the gasket around it; on an undercounter unit, to the door gasket and the latch; on every design, to a bin that sits square in its place so the auger and the sensor line up. Small damage matters here. A split in the cover gasket, a bin with a cracked corner, a latch that no longer pulls the door tight, or a cover warped by being slammed lets moist kitchen air in. The ice sweats, fuses into clumps, and meltwater drips from the compartment onto the shelves or out onto the floor. The technician checks the seal with the paper test and a close look for frost trails, inspects the bin, its rails and the cover hinges, and replaces the parts that no longer close tightly.

How the visit goes

Ice bin and door seal repair,
step by step.

Hand back a compartment that closes tight all round and keeps loose, dry ice through the day.

01

Look for frost trails, water on the door liner and clumped ice, and test each seal by closing it on a strip of paper.

02

Take the bin out and check it for cracks, a broken auger mount and rails that no longer hold it square.

03

Inspect the compartment cover, its hinges and latch, and the door gasket on an undercounter unit.

04

Replace the bin, the cover gasket, the door gasket or the latch, and set the cover to close evenly.

Gaskets and latches are inexpensive and fitted from the front. A new bin made for one model, especially one with the auger built in, costs a little more.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Tampa Bay's damp air finds any gap in an ice bin's seal, and a bin that frosts or clumps soon after it is emptied is checked for a cracked bin, a warped door seal or a dispenser flap that no longer closes flat.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

In Orlando vacation homes, bins get pulled out, dropped and slid back crooked by guests, and a bin that does not seat stops the dispenser and lets warm air in, so the bin's rails, its latch and the seal behind it are set right.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

On an outdoor bar in South Florida, salt air and humidity attack an undercounter ice maker's door gasket first, and a gasket that has hardened or pulled away lets moist air in until the stored ice melts at its edges and refreezes.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Narrow New York kitchens put the freezer drawer where hips and chairs bump it, and a freezer ice bin that has been knocked off its track or a drawer seal that no longer closes flat causes clumped ice and frost on the bin walls.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

A Houston kitchen opened to a humid backyard all summer loads the ice bin with moisture, and a door or bin seal that was only marginal becomes the reason ice clumps into blocks, so the seal is replaced before the ice maker is blamed.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland basement bar units spend the winter at rest and the summer in heavy use, and a door gasket that dried out while unused lets warm air in, which shows up as a wet bin and slow ice at the first graduation party.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

An outdoor ice maker in Los Angeles works in dry heat and direct sun, which bakes its door gasket stiff, and a gasket that no longer seals lets ice melt faster than the unit can replace it, so the gasket is renewed before the cooling is questioned.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Near the San Diego coast an outdoor ice maker's door and its hinge hardware corrode in the salt air, and a door that sags away from its gasket is re-hung with new hardware along with the seal, not just fitted with a new gasket.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Damp fog near the Bay reaches bins in kitchens that stay cool and are opened often, and an ice bin that frosts over in spite of a working ice maker is checked at its seal and at the chute door before anything else.

Questions about
the ice bin and door seal repair.

How can I tell if the seal on the ice compartment is leaking?
Close the cover on a strip of paper at several points around its edge and pull gently. It should drag everywhere; where it slides out freely, the seal is not touching. Frost that grows in a line from one corner, or water beading on the door liner, points to the same spot.
The ice bin cracked at the corner. Does the whole bin need replacing?
In most cases, yes. Tape or glue does not survive the cold and the moving auger, and a cracked bin sheds plastic into the ice. The bin is specific to the model, so the number on the label inside the compartment helps.
Why does water drip from the door onto the shelf below?
Ice in the door compartment is melting because warm air is getting in, and the water runs out at the lowest point. A torn cover seal or a cover that does not latch is the usual reason; less often, the fan that cools the compartment has stopped.
