GE Profile Opal Defrosting indicator

If the Opal 2.0 detects a frozen auger and low ice production, it lights Defrosting and runs a rinse to thaw itself, then goes back to making ice.

Book a visit

Three short steps, about a minute.

or call (844) 773-0701

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from GE Profile's own guidance for Defrosting on its ice makers. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Let the defrost finish; do not unplug the unit partway through.

02

Keep the Opal at least 4 inches from walls on the sides and back so it can shed heat.

03

If Defrosting comes on often or the unit squeaks, descale it with white vinegar as the manual describes.

04

If it keeps defrosting and still makes little ice, book a visit.

Still there?

It usually turns into ice maker assembly replacement. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

Defrosting is not an error in the usual sense; it is the Opal clearing ice from its own auger. Frequent defrosts, though, usually mean mineral scale is building up inside.

notice with it.

Questions
about Defrosting.

Can I clear Defrosting myself?
Let the defrost finish; do not unplug the unit partway through. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
How long does an Opal stay on Defrosting?
GE gives 30 to 45 minutes for the automatic defrost. The front button does not respond until it is done.
Why does my Opal squeak before it shows Defrosting?
GE says the Opal may squeak as ice builds up around the mechanism, and that more frequent squeaking usually calls for a vinegar cleaning to remove scale.
Is Defrosting on an Opal a reason to book a visit?
Not the first time. If it cycles into Defrosting again and again and ice output stays low after descaling, the auger or its motor needs a look.

Still showing Defrosting?

Book with the code or the blink pattern written exactly as the ice maker shows it, the full model number, and whether there is any water on the floor — when there is a code, that is where the diagnosis starts.
