GE Profile ice makers,
specifically.

GE Profile is the GE family's make with the widest spread of ice: in-door and freezer ice makers in its French door and 3- and 4-door models, a 15-inch built-in nugget unit, and the Opal countertop nugget ice maker that runs from a reservoir. The Opal alone brings its own set of lights and cleaning routines.

The GE Profile lineup

What is particular
to GE Profile.

Profile ice comes from door and freezer ice makers in French door and convertible-drawer models, the UNC15NJII built-in nugget unit with Check Water and auger lights, and Opal countertop units in original and 2.0 versions. Each has its own signals, so we ask which one you have when you book.

The Opal has no water line

An Opal draws from its reservoir or a side tank, so Add Water, not a valve, is its most common stop. It needs drinking water under 12 grains per gallon of hardness, and harder water shortens the time between descaling.

An auger that defrosts itself

When an Opal 2.0 senses a frozen auger and low output, it lights Defrosting and runs a rinse that can take 30 to 45 minutes. Frequent defrosts and squeaking point to scale, and GE's cure is a vinegar cleaning.

The filter reports on the top panel

Profile 3- and 4-door models read their XWFE filter and show Replace Filter, Expired Filter, Err or Leak Detected on the top display. Err and Leak Detected are the two that stop ice before any part fails.

A button to turn the ice maker off

Profile top panels carry an Ice Maker button that toggles ice making on and off, and it is also part of the Sabbath and door alarm key combinations. An ice maker switched off by mistake is a common find.

Parts

Opal parts and the built-in nugget unit's auger motor are specific to those products, and some may need to be ordered after the first visit. Door and freezer ice maker parts are listed by the refrigerator's model number.

Repair or replace

A built-in Profile refrigerator or undercounter nugget unit is usually worth repairing when one part fails. An older countertop Opal with a failed sealed system is the case where replacement is the fair comparison.

Questions about
GE Profile ice makers.

Why is my Opal squeaking?
GE says an Opal may squeak as ice builds up around its mechanism when it needs a defrost, and that frequent squeaking usually calls for a vinegar cleaning to remove scale.
Does the Opal need to be plumbed in?
No. It runs from a reservoir you fill with drinking water, or from the optional side tank that sits beside it.
What does Err mean on a GE Profile top display?
That no filter is present or the wrong one is installed. Fit a genuine XWFE or the bypass plug.
How do I turn the ice maker back on on a GE Profile French door model?
Press the Ice Maker button on the top control panel; it toggles ice making on and off.
