Thermador ice makers,
specifically.

Every Thermador ice maker sold in the US today makes ice inside a freezer: in freezer columns, in the freezer drawers of French door models and in the freezer drawer of its under-counter combo unit. Many make Thermador's Diamond Ice, and the newest built-in French door models add a second shape.

Thermador builds 1 of the 4 ice maker types this site covers. Which one decides how the visit is planned.

All ice maker types

What is particular
to Thermador.

Thermador's Freedom columns, built-in and freestanding French door models and the 24-inch under-counter combo drawer all make ice in a freezer section. The model number tells us which ice maker, filter and bin switch the unit uses.

Diamond Ice and a second shape

Thermador's built-in French door models pair Diamond Ice with a newer Entertaining Ice in a drawer given over to ice. Two ice makers in one drawer means we test each before replacing either.

A bin switch on the back wall

On built-in Thermador units, the ice bin must be pushed fully in to press a detection switch on the back wall. A bin that sits a little forward stops production even though everything else works.

The ice scoop can stop production

Thermador warns that a scoop left in the ice container hides the true fill level from the sensor, and the ice maker stops. It is the first thing we check when a bin is only half full.

Ice in an under-counter drawer

The 24-inch under-counter combo unit has a filtered automatic ice maker in its freezer drawer, rated at about 5.2 pounds a day. It is still a freezer ice maker, with the same water line and filter checks.

Parts

Ice maker assemblies and filters for current Thermador columns and French door models are generally available. Parts for the Diamond Ice and dual ice drawers are model-specific and may need to be ordered after the first visit.

Repair or replace

A built-in Thermador is almost always worth repairing when the ice maker fails. The cabinet, panels and cooling system far outlast a single ice maker or valve.

Questions about
Thermador ice makers.

How long does a new Thermador take to start making ice?
Thermador says about 24 hours from switching on to the first ice, and about 72 hours to full production. Once cold, the ice maker should make roughly 70 to 120 cubes a day.
Why did my Thermador ice maker stop with the bin only half full?
Thermador names a scoop left in the container as a common cause, because it blocks the level sensor. On built-in units, also push the bin all the way back so it presses the detection switch.
Why does my Thermador ice taste stale after a filter change?
Thermador's column manual says to throw away the ice made in the first 24 hours after a new filter or bypass cartridge goes in. If the taste stays after that, the filter or the bin needs attention.
