LG ice makers,
specifically.

LG puts ice in two places: a slim ice system in the fresh food door that feeds a tall dispenser, and freezer ice makers, including the Craft Ice maker that drops slow-melting round ice. LG's own code list gives the ice side its own two-letter codes, so an IF, IS or It on the panel already narrows the search.

The LG lineup

What is particular
to LG.

LG's current French door, 4-door and side-by-side lines split into InstaView, Door-in-Door and Craft Ice models, and many carry two ice makers. The model number tells us whether the ice side has a Craft Ice mold, a slim door system or both.

Round ice from the freezer

On Craft Ice models the sphere mold sits in the freezer compartment while a second ice maker in the door makes cubes and crushed ice. A problem with round ice and a problem with cubes can therefore sit in two different places in the same cabinet.

A slim ice system in the door

LG's Slim SpacePlus system keeps the door ice maker thin to free shelf space. That design packs the ice maker, its bin and the auger into a tight door compartment, so frost around it shows up quickly as slow ice.

A flow sensor on the water line

LG reads the water going to the ice maker with a flow sensor, and gF on the display means that reading is off or the house pressure is low. An ice maker that overfills and spills can be the same problem.

Defrost first on the ice fan code

For the IF code, LG's first step is a full manual defrost, because frost around the ice maker fan is a common cause. We check the door seal and leveling afterward so the frost does not come back.

Parts

Door ice maker assemblies, ice fans and water valves for recent LG models are usually in stock. Craft Ice molds and certain door harnesses are model-specific and can take extra days.

Repair or replace

Most LG ice codes point to a fan, a sensor, a valve or the ice maker itself, and each is a part-level repair. When the door ice compartment keeps icing up because the cabinet is out of level or the seal is torn, those fixes come first.

Questions about
LG ice makers.

Why does my LG make round ice slowly but cubes normally?
On Craft Ice models the round ice comes from a separate mold in the freezer, while cubes come from the door ice maker. A slow sphere maker and a healthy cube maker point to the freezer side only.
Is it safe to defrost my LG myself when the IF code shows?
Yes, LG's own steps for IF begin with unplugging, emptying the ice bin and leaving the doors open for about eight hours with towels down. If IF returns after that, book a visit so the fan and seal can be checked.
Does gF on my LG always mean a broken part?
No. LG ties gF to either the flow sensor or low water pressure, so check that the supply valve is fully open and the line is not kinked before booking a visit.
What does the C1 code on my LG dispenser panel mean?
LG uses C1 when the display and the dispenser stop talking to each other. There are no owner steps for it, so a technician has to trace the wiring and boards through the door hinge.
