Viking ice makers,
specifically.

Viking sells 15-inch undercounter ice makers in clear, craft and nugget versions, most with a drain pump, and puts an automatic ice maker in the freezer of its refrigerators. Different generations signal trouble in different ways, from a blue Check Water light to lamp patterns tied to Er codes.

The Viking lineup

What is particular
to Viking.

We see Viking's panel-ready clear, craft and nugget ice models, earlier FGIM, FPIM and FGNI units, and the freezer ice makers in Viking refrigerators. The model number tells us whether the unit reports through lamps, a Check Water light or none at all.

Lamp patterns on the nugget model

The panel-ready nugget model uses ICE, NO WATER and DRAIN lamps, and which ones blink or stay lit together identifies the problem. Three blinking lamps mean a warm evaporator, three steady lamps a cold room.

A drain pump that pauses the unit

Viking's clear ice model with drain pump shuts the unit off for a while when a lot of water creates a high-limit condition. Standing water in the bin with a quiet unit often traces to the pump's vent or drain line.

Room temperature matters

Viking lists a minimum room temperature of 55°F for its clear ice model, because the bin thermistor can read a cold room and stop early. Garage and basement installations are where we see this most.

A tube that doubles as a sensor

On the older 15-inch clear and nugget models, a loop of tubing inside the bin is also the ice level sensor. A scoop or bag resting against it can stop production with a half-empty bin.

Parts

Drain pumps, water level sensors and control boards differ between the current and older Viking ice models. Parts for discontinued models may take longer to source.

Repair or replace

A Viking undercounter unit with a failed pump, sensor or valve is usually worth repairing. If an older discontinued model needs a sealed-system repair, a newer unit can be the better value.

Questions about
Viking ice makers.

What do the blinking lamps on my Viking nugget ice maker mean?
Each pattern is a code. NO WATER alone is the water supply, DRAIN alone the drain, and all three blinking together a warm evaporator; the pattern tells us where to start.
Why is the Check Water light flashing blue on my Viking?
Water is not reaching the ice maker. The control looks for water every 20 minutes and resumes ice making by itself when the supply comes back.
Why does my Viking clear ice maker stop in the garage?
Viking lists a minimum room temperature of 55°F. Below that the bin thermistor can read the room as a full bin and shut the unit off.
How often should a Viking ice maker be cleaned?
The older models turn on a Time to Clean light after six months, and the nugget model flickers its lamps after six months of ice making. Use Viking's own ice machine cleaner.
