Sub-Zero ice makers,
specifically.

Sub-Zero makes ice in three places: the UC-15I undercounter ice maker, the ice drawer of its column freezers, and the freezer of built-in models, some with an external dispenser on the door. Its built-in controls report ice and water trouble with three-part codes such as 30 8 05, while the undercounter unit speaks through lights.

The Sub-Zero lineup

What is particular
to Sub-Zero.

We see the UC-15I undercounter ice maker (indoor and outdoor), Designer column freezers with ice drawers, and Classic and Designer built-ins with and without dispensers. The series letters on the rating plate decide which code list and which ice maker module apply.

Three-part codes for ice and water

On Classic built-in models, codes that start with 30 cover the ice maker, dispenser and water parts, 40 marks something that ran past its time limit, and 50 U covers the water flow meter. Reading all three parts tells us whether to start at the valve, the ice maker or the supply line.

A flow meter on the water line

Classic built-ins measure incoming water and report low flow (50 U 86) or no flow (50 U 87) separately. That lets us separate a house pressure problem from a failing valve before we open anything.

An undercounter unit that stops itself

The UC-15I shuts down and flashes its blue ICE light after two over-long freeze and harvest cycles in a row or about two days without filling the bin. Most of those stops trace back to the water supply or a clogged filter.

Water pressure and room limits

The UC-15I guide asks for 20 to 80 psi at the supply and lists an ambient range for indoor and outdoor models. Low pressure or a hot outdoor bar is often the first thing we measure when production drops.

Parts

Ice maker modules, water valves, filters and dispenser parts are matched to the series and serial number. Parts for older built-ins may need to be ordered after the first visit.

Repair or replace

A built-in Sub-Zero with an ice problem is almost always repaired, because the problem sits in one module, valve or switch rather than the whole unit. An older UC-15I that needs a sealed-system repair and a new ice maker at once is the case where replacement is worth weighing.

Questions about
Sub-Zero ice makers.

Why does my Sub-Zero undercounter ice maker have a blinking blue ICE light?
The UC-15I has put itself into automatic shut-off, usually after it could not fill the bin normally. Check that the water is on, try the unit without its filter, and give it an hour to drop ice before booking a visit.
What do the three numbers in a Sub-Zero ice code mean?
On Classic built-ins, the first number is the group, the second the part and the third the exact condition. 30 8 05, for example, means no fill signal came from the ice maker.
Can low water pressure stop a Sub-Zero from making ice?
Yes. The UC-15I needs 20 to 80 psi, and Classic built-ins log low or no flow as 50 U 86 or 50 U 87. We check the supply before replacing any part.
Does a Sub-Zero with an internal dispenser have an ice maker in the door?
No. On internal dispenser models the dispenser sits inside the refrigerator and the ice maker stays in the freezer. Only the dispenser models with an external dispenser deliver ice through the door panel.
